Abstract
The automotive cooling inventory is normally designed such that it can endure the excessive heat load situations that occur sporadically. Considering most normal driving modes, the cooling systems are unnecessarily large, which increases harmful emissions and fuel consumption of vehicles. An experimental study was carried out to evaluate a novel automotive cooling strategy using the latent heat of a phase change material (PCM) that made it possible to downsize the automotive engine cooling system. The heat load averaging capability of the PCM led to around 35% decrease in cooling system, and the engine warm-up time reduced around 60% as a result of downsizing the cooling system. In addition, severe coolant temperature shaking was successfully averaged out in the downsized cooling system with a heat accumulator containing PCM. This innovative cooling concept will definitely contribute to a considerable improvement in terms of fuel economy and emissions characteristics of vehicles by achieving stable combustion condition of engines as well as reducing total body weight.
