퀘이형제 애니메이션 <악어의 거리>의 초현실주의적 표현 특성 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 퀘이 형제(Quay Brothers)의 애니메이션 <악어의 거리, The Street of Crocodiles>에 나타난 특징들을 초현실주의 이론과 결부시켜 연구하였다. 그리고 초현실주의 이론과 프로이드의 ‘언캐니’ 개념의 연관성을 추적해 봄으로써 작품의 불가해한 내용을 이해하는 단초를 제공하고자 하는 목적을 가진다. 본 연구의 주된 내용과 범위는 초현실주의의 ‘경이’의 개념과 프로이드의 ‘언캐니’ 이론을 비교분석과 이를 기반으로 그 특징들을 시각화한 영상사례의 시각적 특징에 대한 분석이 포함된다. 연구방법으로는 초현실주의와 프로이드 ‘언캐니’의 관련 문헌을 1차 연구자료로 삼았다. 덧붙여 선행 연구와 그 외 출판물들, 비평적 자료 등을 보조 텍스트로 참고하였다. 초현실주의 미학의 한 근간을 이루고 있는 ‘경이’의 개념은 ‘발작적 아름다움’과 ‘객관적 우연’을 통해 설명되고 있는데, 이는 프로이드의 ‘언캐니’를 유발시키는 트라우마의 원형과 개념적 공통점을 가진다. 이러한 ‘무의식’에 관한 탐구들이 <악어의 거리>에서 어떻게 시각화 되었는지 추적해 보는 일은 유의미한 일이다. 작품 분석결과, <악어의 거리>를 관통하고 있는 주제와 시각적 표현이 초현실주의의 경이의 개념에 기반하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었으며, 이런 점에서 <악어의 거리>는 20C 초, 초현실주의와 프로이드가 주창했던 ‘무의식‘에 대한 현대판 영상 보고서라 할 수 있다.

This article aims to examine the characteristics made known in directed by the Quay Brothers reviewing them with a surrealism theory. It intends to provide clues to understand inexplicable contents of the work by tracing the relations between a surrealism theory and Freud`s concept of "uncanny." Main scopes and contents of this article are the comparative analysis of surrealistic aesthetics and Freud`s "uncanny." and analyzing visual features of animation based on these two theories. The Main method of this article is to analyze the books and periodicals about two theories. Additionally, literatures including precedent studies, other publications and critics would be taken as a second text. The concept of "marvelous" comprising a part of the basis of surrealistic aesthetics is explained by "convulsive beauty" and "objective chance." It associates the prototype of a trauma which induces Freud`s "uncanny." It is significant to analyze how those explorations on "unconsciousness" are visualized in The Street of Crocodiles. According to the analysis of the work, it has been found that the theme and visual expressions penetrating The Street of Crocodiles are based on the concept of marvelous in surrealism. In this point, The Street of Crocodiles can be said to be the modern-version cinematic report of "unconsciousness" that was advocated by surrealism and Freud in the beginning of the 20th century.
