촛대의 역사적 고찰 및 국내 공예가의 조형 사례 연구

Abstract

고대의 인류는 불을 발견한 뒤 이를 다양하게 활용하는 법을 터득하였는데, 그중에서도 촛불은 어둠을 밝히는 용도로서 일상생활에 필수품으로 사용되었다. 그러나 전기조명의 보급 이후 촛불은 조명의 목적보다 종교적 의식이나 기념, 축하의 의미로 활용되면서 부차적인 기능을 맡게 되었고 이렇게 역할이 변화됨에 따라 초를 받치는 촛대의 모습도 사용되는 장소에 맞는 형태로 변화되었다. 현대에는 공간 분위기 연출을 위한 소품으로 촛대를 활용하고 있는데 이로 인하여 다양한 분야의 공예 작가들이 자신의 미학적 감각을 표현하는 대상으로 제작하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 과거에 사용되었던 촛대의 기본 구조와 분류 방법에 대해 알아보고 이를 바탕으로 현대 공예 작가들이 제작한 촛대를 기능성을 중시한 작품과 조형성을 강조한 작품 그리고 사용된 소재의 특성을 활용한 작품으로 나누어 조사하였다. 이와 같은 연구를 통하여 촛대가 단순히 부차적인 기능의 소품이 아닌 식탁 위의 주요장식물로 사용될 수 있음을 인식하고 더 많은 공예 작가들에 의해 다양한 작품으로 표현되기를 기대한다.

The discovery of the fire provided various convenience for human social activities and increased the quality of life. Among the various ways to use the fire in our daily life, candlelight was used as a necessity in daily life to light up the darkness. However, as the electric lighting came into wide use, candlelight was used for religious ceremonies, commemorations and celebrations rather than the purpose of lighting and secondary function was given. With this change of the role of candlelight, the shape of candlestick that holds the candle has also developed into a form suitable for the place where it was used. Candlesticks in modern society are used as props to create a space mood, and as a result, craft artists from various fields are creating candlestick to express their aesthetic sense. I also tried to produce decorative candlestick that can affect the space even when there is no candle according to the changed functions of modern candlestick. Before the production, I investigated the basic structure and classification method of candlestick and examined candlesticks of modern artists by dividing them into functions and structures. Through this study, I hope that the candlestick can be recognized as centerpiece of space rather than just props with secondary function and that they can be expressed as various artworks by more crafts artists.
