성과측정시스템의 이용방식과 환경 불확실성이 성과측정지표의 다양성에 미치는 효과

Abstract

성과측정지표의 다양성에 관한 기존 연구들은 기업 특성, 혁신 주도적 운영실무, 혹은 경영전략이 성과측정지표의 다양성에 미치는 효과를 분석해 왔다. 하지만 성과측정시스템은 그것을 이용하는 경영진과 분리하여 이해할 수 없으며, 포괄적 수준의 정보는 일반적으로 불확실성하의 의사결정 상황에서 정보적 가치를 갖는다는 점을 생각해 보면, 경영진의 성과측정시스템 이용방식과 환경 불확실성은 성과측정지표의 다양성에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 요인으로 고려될 필요가 있다. 이에 본 연구는 성과측정시스템의 이용방식과 환경 불확실성이 성과측정지표의 다양성에 미치는 효과를 실증적으로 검정하는데 목적을 두었다. 실증분석결과, 진단적 이용과 상호작용적 이용은 모두 성과측정지표의 다양성과 통계적으로 유의한 양(+)의 관계에 있었으며, 환경 불확실성 역시 성과측정지표의 다양성과 통계적으로 유의한 양(+)의 관계에 있는 것으로 나타났다. 성과측정지표를 재무적 지표와 비재무적 지표로 구분하여 수행한 추가분석의 결과를 살펴보면, 진단적 이용은 재무적 성과측정지표의 수에 대해서만 통계적으로 유의한 양(+)의 영향을 미치고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 상호작용적 이용의 경우, 재무적ㆍ비재무적 성과측정지표의 수 모두와 통계적으로 유의한 양(+)의 관련성을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 환경 불확실성 역시 재무적ㆍ비재무적 성과측정지표의 수 모두와 통계적으로 유의한 양(+)의 관련성을 갖고 있었다. 성과측정지표 다양성의 매개효과에 대한 추가분석결과는 성과측정시스템에 대한 이용방식과 환경 불확실성에 따라 성과측정지표를 차별적으로 구축하는 것이 궁극적으로 성과개선에 효과적일 수 있음을 확인시켜주었다. 본 연구는 성과측정시스템 이용방식과 환경 불확실성이 요구하는 가치체계에 따라 성과측정지표의 구성이 변경될 수 있음을 실증적으로 확인시켜주고 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 성과측정지표의 구성에 있어 성과측정시스템의 이용방식과 환경 불확실성이 갖는 역할의 중요성을 확인시켜 주고 있으며, 나아가 기업 특성과 전략적 상황에만 주목해 왔던 선행연구의 분석범위를 확장시키고 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

Prior researches have focused on the contingent factors such as firm characteristics, quality-based initiatives, or business strategy. However, the understanding of performance measurement systems is not able to be separated from the users of performance measures. This consideration enables us to pay attention to both diagnostic use and interactive use of performance measurement systems, and environmental uncertainty. This paper aims to test the effects of the style of use of performance measurement system and environmental uncertainty on performance measure diversity. As a result, both diagnostic use and interactive use were statistically positively associated with performance measure diversity. Environmental uncertainty was also statistically positively associated with performance measure diversity. Additional test classifying performance measures as either financial measures or non-financial measures showed that diagnostic use was associated with only financial measure diversity. Interactive use was associated with both financial measure diversity and non-financial measure diversity. Furthermore, the test for mediating effect of performance measure diversity was performed. The results of additional test indicated that the improvement of business performance could be possible when differential level of performance measure diversity was constructed according to use of performance measurement system and environmental uncertainty. This paper found that the design of performance measurement system can be changed, according to the values generated by the style of use of performance measurement system as well as environmental uncertainty. These findings broadened the scope of the research beyond the scope of prior study just focusing on firm characteristics and business strategy.
