Abstract
This study aims to provide a general framework for incorporating a conversation-analytic approach into the design of workbooks for foreign language learners of spoken Chinese. Examining the speaking component of current Chinese language workbooks reveals that certain interactional elements of naturally-occurring Chinese conversation are largely missing. This paper proposes the integration of four major conversational properties into workbook study: turn-taking practices, sequencing practices, overall conversational structure, and sociolinguistic elements of spoken conversation. By learning interactional speaking skills, Chinese language learners can be more creative in their target language. Having such skills will also enhance learners’ sense of competence by helping them to construct conversational turns in ways similar to naturally-occurring speech. This creativity and confidence can work to teach speaking skills more effectively since learners will be able to apply more of what they are learning in organic conversation.
