Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the association of fitness, body mass index(BMI), and metabolic syndrome (MS) risk factors among Korean male police officers. A total of 176 participated in the cross-sectional study. We measured physical fitness (push-up, sit-up, and grasping-power), BMI and metabolic syndrome risk factors including fasting glucose, waist-circumference (WC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), blood pressure. Results showed that 1) male police officers with higher BMI had significantly increased WC, TG, BP, and HDL-C. 2) male police officers with higher fitness levels had significantly decreased BP and HDL-C. 3) When subjects were divided into four groups: high fitness and low BMI, low fitness and low BMI, high fitness and high BMI, and low fitness and high BMI. low fitness and high BMI subjects had 74.14 times higher the prevalence of metabolic syndrome compared to high fitness and low BMI subjects after adjusted for age. In conclusion, This study showed that fitness and BMI are important factors for the prevention of metabolic syndrome among Korean male police officers.
