Abstract
Detecting signs of cognitive impairment as early as possible is one of the most urgent challenges in preventive care of dementia. It is unclear whether the level of physical fitness factors can serve as markers of low cognitive function and a sign of cognitive impairment. The purpose of this study was to examine an association between each physical fitness and cognitive function. One hundred seventy-eight elderly women participated in this study, their aged was from 65 to 84. Clinical K-MMSE, 6-minute walk test, grip-strength, 30-second arm curl test, 30-second chair stand test, 8foot Up-and Go, Back scratch and BMI were measured. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, frequencies, correlation analysis, ANOVA, and simple liner regression using the IBM 21. SPSS program. In results, statistic tests showed that there were significant differences between cognitive function and 6-minute walk test, 30-second arm curl test, 30-second chair stand test. However, we did not find significant differences between cognitive function and grip-strength, 8foot Up-and Go, Back scratch, and BMI. In conclusions, 6-minute walk test, 30-second arm curl test, 30-second chair stand test may have a potential role foe the strong marker of detecting low cognitive function in female elderly who are free from dementia. The level of physical fitness factors as a role of detecting dementia, however, more research in required with a better study design.
