- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to identify the levels of osteoporosis awareness and bone mineral density (BMD) among female college students in Korea. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 314 college women. Osteoporosis awareness was surveyed by a self-report questionnaire. Bone mineral density was measured by an ultrasound bone densitometry. Data were analyzed using SPSS for windows, version 19.0. The levels of osteoporosis awareness scored as low as the mean 81.28 (range 48∼124). The mean BMD at calcaneal site was -0.35g/cm2 (mean T-score=0.55). The incidence of osteopenia was 27.1%. These results suggest that health care professionals need to provide young women with osteoporosis preventive education, intended to increase their awareness of osteoporosis preventive changes. © 2014 Research India Publications.
