- Abstract
- The main concept of the research is to explore ‘Chinese poetry’ as a learning material for communication. The introduction of this exploration includes learning objective of ‘Chinese Poetry’ course, syllabus, and exemplary teaching methods describing the approaches and techniques. It, therefore, provides a means for the undergraduate courses in South Korea to incorporate into their teaching methodology of ‘Chinese poetry’.
The learning objective is to achieve high level communication skill in Chinese language utilizing ‘Chinese poetry’ as a practical learning material.
The Chinese Poetry for communication course covers poems from Spring and Autumn period to Qing Period.
For the selection of the poems in the course, I suggest to adopt the selection criteria of the Ministry of Education of China selecting those from Chinese textbooks widely familiar with Chinese native speakers from nine years of compulsory education: elementary to middle school.
Students will be requested to participate in project work, presentation, lecturing, and project-related activities for pre-assigned topics such as ‘Chinese political rhetoric poetry’, ‘Poetry for Humanistic journey ’ , ‘Poetry in Pop music’, and ‘Poetry in everyday language’ etc. The most basic contribution of this teaching methodology is revealing the importance and potential of Chinese poetry as a learning material for communication skills for the undergraduate courses in South Korea and suggesting a practical application for classrooms. In addition, it shows how non-native readers understand the source of poetic inspiration of the target culture by learning its custom and tradition in poetry, extend the knowledge by sharing and communicating in the classroom, and thus find their communication skill enhanced.
