Abstract
Closed school facilities in rural communities as well as urban areas are increasing due to the ever-decreasing birth rate and aging of society. Like the closed schools in rural areas or small cities being used for rural experience or training centers, the closed schools in urban areas can be utilized most effectively when it is used as ordinary places that is closer to the busy city life.According to the reference materials of this study, local residents highly preferred the use of closed schools as places for education and culture and art. Typical places for education and culture and art are museums and galleries, and this study focuses more on using the closed school as museums which have more educational aspects. The purpose of this study is to search for the direction of the museum programs for increasing its usage by residents when a closed school is made into a museum. First, cases of closed schools being used as museums were collected and the museum programs were studied and analyzed. Secondly, cases of closed schools in Japan, which aging phenomenon began earlier than Korea, were studied and analyzed, and the museum program of Tokyo Toy Museum, which is being actively utilized by local residents, was studied and analyzed. Thirdly, a museum program to increase usage when closed schools in urban areas is used as a museum was positioned by analyzing what previous museums should correct and make up through the case analysis mentioned above in order to search for the museum program for increasing museum usage and direction of museum operation.
