- Abstract
- The underground utility tunnel is an installation of public facilities such as electricity, gas, water supply, waste water drainage, telephone and communication which are required for managing urban life. Acquiring the stabilityand reliability are regarded as important because it is the public facilities, which provide the conveniences in dailylife, socio-economic activities of citizens; maintain the comfortable urban environment; and efficiently run cities. Theunderground utility tunnel facility is specified in the Urban Planning Act so as to aim for the aesthetic appearance ofa city, preservation of road structure, and smooth flow of traffic. The underground utility tunnel is a very importantinfrastructure in modern urbanization. However, it is true that a lot of problems are being pointed out such as thereduction of air quality, reduction of ventilation volume, dew condensation and non-emission of poisonous gas due tothe lack of smoke ventilating facilities in case of a fire breaking out in a utility channel because, in relative contrastto the rise in demand of underground utility tunnels in the city, the factors of underground space had not been reflectedproperly in the design and construction of underground utility tunnels and its maintenance system. Therefore, the purposeof this study is to establish a database for the environmental information of underground utility tunnels by measuringthe temperature, humidity, surface temperature and air stream velocity in underground utility tunnels, and to use it asbase data for maintaining. The underground utility tunnel located at Inchon, Korea was selected as the subject for thestudy. The point of measurement was the halfway point between the inlet and outlet of the utility tunnel. The airvelocity with and without mechanical ventilation operation were compared and they were summarized. As a result ofmeasuring the underground utility tunnel which was the subject of this study, it is considered that there will be almostno damages such as the weakening of structural durability, corrosion of indoor facilities and electric leakage of electricpower facilities because the normal conditions. However, it is necessary to establish a database by collecting moredata and additional measurement during spring, summer and winter.
