- Abstract
- This research has its purpose in pointing out problems in Poomsae competition rules from athletes’ viewpoint, and suggesting remedies to improve such rules. In order to gather opinions of athletes who have experience as a national Poomsae team member and have been placed in world class competitions, the research conducted structured in-depth interviews under consultation of an expert group, which advised setting interview guidelines. Conclusions are as follows:First, current evaluation system, which differs by each association and leagues, must be standardized. Standardization must be proceed in the way of thoroughly analyzing and researching the rules, which have massive influence on athletic performance, so that it will promote fairness of the competition. Current differences in rules are causing confusion to Korean Poomsae Athletes in world class competitions, and it could also aversely affect their performance. While foreign athletes train themselves with the focus on WTF(World Taekwondo Federation) Poomsae competition rules, Korean athletes must be aware of both KTA(Korean Taekwondo Association) and WTF rules to be selected as a national team member.
Second, as WTF Poomsae rules state that referees shall be placed in all sides, KTA rules should also clarify the location of referees and thereby enhance fairness. If referees are only placed in the front side, blind spots, which the referees are not able to accurately evaluate athletes’ movements, occurs. Then, particularly, evaluation on a) the beginning and the end of actions that the athlete has to show his/her back, b) intersection of the left and the right hand and c) the shout of concentration, will be limited. Moreover, if separate judging system judge on accuracy and judge on expression, just as figure skating and floor exercise are introduced, it would increase professionalism of judges in Poomsae competition.
To advise future researches, a interesting field to explore would be ‘building a cooperative system between KTA and WTF in Taekwondo Poomsae competition’. From now on, we will need more multilateral researches on main agents of Poomsae competitions, such as referees, instructors and competition organizer.
