Abstract
Chang-geuk(the traditional Korean opera) has its origin in Pansori. But it is defined as the different style of prerforming art with Pansori, because it is presented according to the playbook and actors play their roles depending on the characters in text. Chang-geuk was strongly influenced by theatrical forms of foreign nations from its beginning in the early 1900s. Until now it is under the influence of Western theatrical principles. While not establishing its own style as an performing art native to Korea on that ground, Chang-geuk still has repeated the various experiments on performing style for the completion of Korean unique musical performances. This study investigated the process of the transition and development of Chang-geuk from its beginning up to now, and analyzed the stylistic characteristics of Chang-geuk according to each development step by step. At first the early performance style of Chang-geuk changed Pansori to the form of devided song depending on characters, after that Chang-geuk set the type of three-dimensional performance to adapt to indoor stage as rudimentary form of theatrical arts. Second in the 1930s, the Research Society of Chosŏn Song completed the modern performance style of Chang-geuk, made major advances of Chang-geuk through conducting cultural exchanges with people who took active parts in Korean new drama. At third in the 1950s, Yeoseong Guggeuk(the traditional Korean female opera) flourished as public art, and this study analyzed its success factors and characteristics. Finally this research has organized the activities of the National Changgeuk Company Of Korea for modernization of Chang-geuk's performing style into five key phases. Chang-geuk was born under the influence of discourse for the new culture in Korean modern society. Through upheaval of modern and contemporary history, it grew as a kind of traditional art that represents Korean performing arts, while also it is the most brilliant legacy of Korean culture. Therefore Chang-geuk is to be recognized as performing art, which has developed and modernized Korean traditional performing arts continuously. Through this recognition, we must set the correct direction of development for the future Chang-geuk. The ultimate goal of this study is to contribute smaller to the academic development for Chang-geuk, in order that it can establish itself more firmly as a global musical theatre such as Western opera, Beijing opera of China and Kabuki of Japan.
