Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the personal and relational variables affecting on the ambivalent feelings that grandmother has about their adult children. The participants were 355 grandmothers rearing their grandchildren in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis using statistical program SPSS 23.0. The results of the study are as follows. First, the neuroticism in grandmother was associated with greater ambivalence. The conscientiousness was associated with less ambivalence toward the daughter, and with greater ambivalence toward the daughter-in–law. Second, the consensual solidarity was associated with less ambivalence. The normative solidarity was associated with greater ambivalence, and this was significant only for the daughter-in-law relationship. Third, the negative social exchanges was associated with greater ambivalence. Fourth, sociodemographic characteristics such as caring time and education level of grandmother were related only to ambivalence toward the daughter-in-law. Based on the results of this study, we discussed how to reduce the ambivalent feelings of grandmother.
