Abstract
This study is about Koremori’s death, who was the grandson of Kiyomori. In Heikemonogatari, the story of Koremori’s death is described in details. After escaping from the battlefield, he become a Buddhist monk, and made a pilgrimage to Kumano, and finally he fell into the water and committed suicide. In Heikemonogatari, he committed suicide for reincarnation. Heikemonogatari emphasizes only the religious aspects of Koremori’s death. The study began with the question of whether he had chosen to die for his religious belief only. There were various stories around Koemori and his death. It is necessary to study how the story about his death was made, and accepted and changed historically. In previous studies, religion or the sorrow of separation was considered as a keyword to explain the death of Koremori. In this essay, I paid attention to his special position as the first son of the Komatsu family. The paper focuses on the diversity and expansion possibility of Koremori's death, and aims to crack the interpretations that focused on Buddhism or grief of parting.
