Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dance type on appetite relating hormone and bone mineral density in dance-major female college students. The subjects were 36 female college students. They were divided into three groups: General(n=12), Ballet major(n=12) and Korean Dance major(n=12). The analysis of data revealed the following findings. Appetite relating hormone and bone mineral density showed significant according to dance major. Dance major group had significantly lower leptin in comparison to general group. Dance major group had significantly higher ghrelin in comparison to general group. Dance major group had significantly higher bone mineral density in comparison to general group. Bone mineral density showed significant negative correlation with leptin and showed significant positive correlation with ghrelin. Leptin showed significant negative correlation with ghrelin. In conclusion, dance-major female college students with eating disorder had higher risk of health related diseases and decrease in bone mineral density. We found a significant relationship between appetite relating hormone and bone mineral density. There are needs for prospective study about the possible development of dance program for prevention of eating disorder and osteoporosis. With the conclusion from the study, it is expected to bring positive effects that dance-major female college students establish their positive self-physical images through education for weight control. Therefore, we should strive to develop the dance program for prevention of eating disorder and osteoporosis would improve quality of life in female college students.
