- Abstract
- The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence rate of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) in elderly patients with Parkinson’s disease and compare the prevalence rate by Long-term Care service use and service type. We analysed the National Health Insurance Claims data and Long-term Care Claims data. In this study, the prevalence rate of PIM in Korean elderly patients with Parkinson’s disease was very high (LTC user group-45.6% vs. non user-40%). We found that prevalence rate of PIM was related with poly-pharmacy, women, advanced age, high number of medical institutions, high hospitalization days and outpatient days, and disabled. The commonly used PIM drugs were found as benzodiazepines, first generation antihistamines. In particular, the prevalence of PIM was higher in the Long-term care facility user group than in-home service user group. The high prevalence of PIM in elderly patients with Parkinson’s disease suggests that systematic and comprehensive measures should be prioritized.
