Xu gang’s ecological thoughts and new humanism

Abstract

A prominent writer of ecocritical reportage, Xu Gang plays a pivotal role in exposing the detrimental consequences of environmental destruction and in elevating ecological literacy. As he delineates indiscreet deforestation and desertification in his critically acclaimed work Loggers, Wake up!, he postulates the myopic pursuit of materialistic gains and the lack of environmental awareness as the major causes of these phenomena and extols the heroes who overcame environmental crises with their sacrifices. Xu Gang’s perspective on ecology is not unlike the stance taken by Neo-Humanists, who attribute the numerous negative effects of capitalism, such as environmental issues and wars, to the downfall of moral values. According to Neo-Humanism, the pursuit of progress via excessive emotion and greed and the development of technology have deprived society of humanity, dismantled wholesome social orders, and therefore driven the world into misery. © Rushing Water Publishers Ltd. 2018.
