- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to examine relationship between bone mineral density levels on cognitive function and metabolic risk factors in the elderly. The subjects were 45 elderly, aged over 65.
They were divided into three groups: Osteoporosis(n=15), Osteopenia(n=15) and normal(n=15). The analysis of data revealed the following findings. Cognitive function and metabolic risk factors showed significant according to bone mineral density levels. Osteoporosis group had significantly lower cognitive function in comparison to osteopenia and normal group. Osteoporosis group showed dementia and osteopenia group showed mild cognitive impairment. Osteoporosis group and osteopenia group showed metabolic syndrome. WC, TG, Glucose, SBP, DBP of metabolic risk factors showed significant negative correlation with bone mineral density and T-score. Cognitive function showed significant positive correlation with bone mineral density and T-score. In conclusion, elderly with dementia and metabolic syndrome had higher risk of osteoporosis. Among components of metabolic syndrome, HDL-C and blood pressure was associated with osteoporosis and osteopenia. Elderly with osteoporosis had lower cognitive function and had higher metabolic risk factors. We found a significant relationship between decreased bone mineral density, cognitive function and metabolic syndrome. There are needs for prospective study about the possible development of osteoporosis for prevention of dementia and metabolic syndrome.
Therefore, we should strive to develop the exercise program for prevention of osteoporosis would improve quality of life in elderly.
