- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of fathers’ parenting efficacy and empathy on coparenting. The subjects of the study were 380 fathers of 3-5 year-old children living in Gyeonggi-do. The collected data were analyzed by frequency analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression analysis using the SPSS 23.0 program. The main results of the study are as follows. First, the father’s parenting efficacy was found to have effects on coparenting.
In terms of parenting efficacy, nurturance, play, discipline, and teaching are related to the support, solidarity and shared parenting elements of coparenting. Second, the father’s empathy was related to coparenting. In coparenting, support was related to cognitive empathy, solidarity to cognitive empathy, emotional disconnection and the undermining of cognitive empathy, emotional contagion, emotional disconnection, and shared parenting to emotional disconnection. Therefore, this study explores the father's internal variables that can affect coparenting. It discusses the necessity of raising parenting efficacy in terms of child-rearing and empathy to increase coparenting opportunities for fathers.
