Abstract
This study aims to examine the current situation of female referees and provide basic sources to enhance their status in the contemporary society where gender equality is an important issue. Throughout this research, we gained the following results. First, female referees account for about 15% among entire referees. As referees, they experienced any sort of prejudice and unequal treatment. Furthermore, there is little research on female sports. Yet most studies focus on various conflicts they mainly experience in such a field. Second, they are vulnerable to various violent conflicts like other female players. Media outlets focus on their appearance rather than competence. What is worse, they are exposed to sexual violence. Third, the current hiring referee system should be more transparent and objective as part of future policies to address and develop the present female sports referee system. In addition, appropriate tasks should be assigned to them after figuring out their personal merits, and impartiality should be highlighted in assigning referees in sports games. Policy foundations should be established in an effort to secure their rights by carrying out studies on female referees and strengthening education on the human rights of referees.
