- Abstract
- The purpose of the study was to provide an active group music listening program and analyze its effectiveness. The researcher designed an active group music listening program in the form of a Colored Music Tower (CMT), which integrated music with the three-dimensional visual arts curriculum for elementary school students. One group consisting of 77students from one elementary school participated in the two-hour program divided into three sessions. Students self-reported their experience of the program and their ability to recall the music, with 70 of the 77 student surveys being analyzed. According to the study, 49students (70%) out of 70 students replied that they could remember at least three of the seven kinds of music, and all students answered that they could recall at least one piece of music. Although students who said they liked the general listening activity the most reported recalling more pieces of music than those who preferred matching colors or building the tower, the increased recall was not statistically significant. Nevertheless, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between those students who reported that matching colors to music was relatively easy and the number of pieces of music they recalled. The program was suitable for young students, as it kept their attention throughout, and enhanced recall for some students. The Colored Music Tower had a positive effect on students who actively participated in music listening activities, and has demonstrated its effectiveness as a music appreciation activity.
