Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dance type on body composition and regional bone mineral density in dance-major female college students. The subjects were 40 female college students. They were divided into two groups: Korean Dance major(n=20) and Ballet major(n=20). The analysis of data revealed the following findings. Body composition and regional bone mineral density showed significant according to dance major. The % body fat in both groups was lower than the normal range, and Korean dance major group was significantly higher than ballet major group. The BMI was in the normal range for both groups, and Korean dance major group was significantly lower than ballet major group. Korean dance major group and ballet major group showed high levels of bone mineral density in all parts of the body within the normal range. Both groups had the highest bone mineral density in the leg and the lowest in the rib bone mineral density. The bone mineral density of the arms and ribs was significantly higher in the Korean dance group compared to the ballet group. Bone mineral density in the pelvic region was significantly higher in the ballet major group than in the Korean dance group. Bone mineral density in the arm showed significant positive correlation with FFM and significant negative correlation with % body fat. Bone mineral density in the ribs showed also significant negative correlation with % body fat. In conclusion, dance-major female college students had better health related body composition and had higher bone mineral density in all parts of the body. We found a significant relationship between dance-major type and regional bone mineral density. There are needs for prospective study about the possible development of dance program for prevention of obesity and osteoporosis. Therefore, we should strive to develop the dance program for health would improve quality of life.
