Abstract
The Chinese sentence-final particle de has received much scholarly attention. However, most previous research has examined the syntactic or semantic functions of de in isolated sentences. The present study investigates how the sentence-final particle de develops from the interaction between participants in a particular dialogic and sequentially unfolding context. It also analyzes the discourse-pragmatic function of sentence-final particle de in ongoing spoken discourse. The findings show that de serves several functions. First, de is used when knowledge asymmetries occur between the speaker and the hearer. Second, de is used when conflict may or does occur between participants. Third, de is used when the speaker tries to persuade the hearer in an indirect way. When the speaker has more detailed and in-depth knowledge and a primary right to make assertions and assessments in this domain, he/she uses the sentence-final particle de to communicate his/her assertive and affirmative stance. This may persuade the hearer to respond in the speaker’s preferred way.
