- Abstract
- Objectives The current study investigates the English instructional needs of nursing students at X University to guide the potential development of nursing English for Special Purposes (ESP) course.
Methods Due to the low enrollment of elective general English courses among nursing students at X University, the study was conducted to examined the needs for a more specialized nursing ESP curriculum. A needs analysis questionnaire was conducted to 233 nursing students at X university in order to find out their satisfaction level of the current general English curriculum and the students’ perceived needs for nursing ESP. The questionnaire also asked students to identify their preferred medium of instruction for a potential nursing ESP course.
Results The findings from the showed that students had a moderately positive satisfactory level toward the cur rent general English course. With regard to their perceptions on the need for nursing ESP and their willingness to enroll in such courses, students showed a high level of need for nursing ESP as well as a high willingness to take nursing ESP courses if offered. Students’ interest in English showed statistically significant relationship with their perceived need for ESP, intent to take ESP, need for native English-speaking teachers, and the amount of English used in instruction.
Conclusions The students wanted to enhance their oral communication abilities from nursing ESP in order to meet the diversified needs of the current workplace. Based on the findings of the study, implications for developing nursing ESP courses are offered.
