- Abstract
- Despite continuous improvements of the emergency medical service system, aging of population has an adverse impact on survival outcomes. This study was a cross-sectional study utilizing prehospital care report data in 2017, and we compared the epidemiological trends in cardiac arrest incidence and survival between the ≥65 years out-of-hospital cardiac arrest group and <65 years group. The proportion of male older adults was relatively high (61.4%) as well as the proportion of elderly for whom defibrillation was not performed (85.0%) in traumatic elderly. There were statistically significant differences in these factors (p=.001; <.001). The increasing curve of prevalence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and decreasing curve of survival to admission with advancing age crossed in the 55-64 years group. The incidence of cardiac arrest increased while survival decreased, reaching survival turning point. The incidence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest was very high, however survival to admission was low among the elderly. Significant number of the older adults who had out-of-hospital cardiac arrest were male, and a defibrillation could not be performed for a high percentage of these elderly cardiac arrest patients.
