- Abstract
- Recently, walking environment has been considered as one of important issues in city life, so that studies and projects, led by local government, are performed in order to find out theoretical and practical ways of improving the safety, comfort, and walkability of pedestrians on shared streets. Especially, it is widely accepted that it is significant for pedestrians to have walkable environment by reducing potential risks which are often discovered in shared streets. This study, therefore, aims to investigate characteristics of walking environments on shared streets, and to explore to what degree they influence pedestrians’ movement patterns and behaviors. As research methodologies, empirical studies, such as observing pedestrian’s activities and tracking their movements on shared streets, and questionnaire survey were performed at the commercial district adjacent to the Yeouido National Assembly Station, Seoul. Through the observations, it is quite obvious that pedestrians’ movements are discontinuous or interrupted by a series of street obstacles or vehicle’s traffic, so that the movement flow is highly affected by the characteristics of sidewalk design. Additionally, it is apparent that the movement’s direction was unexpectedly altered because of smoking and parking areas along the streets. Based on these findings, it is suggested practical ways of how to improve walking environment in terms of smoking areas or parking policy. Regarding the fact that the walking environment is not on the main agenda for the local parking department, substantial discussions between policy-making departments should be followed to make it better
