Abstract
Purpose of review: Electrospun fibers have attracted attention as scaffolds with a three-dimensional fibrous structure which can mimic the structure of the extracellular matrix. This review summarizes how electrospun fibers can be utilized for corneal regeneration. Recent findings: Recent studies have demonstrated how electrospun fiber parameters, including diameter, alignment, density, membrane thickness, and mechanical and optical properties determine the availability and efficacy of corneal regeneration. The well-organized three-dimensional electrospun fibers were modified depending on the purpose, such as corneal tissue substituent and therapeutic factor delivery. Summary: Electrospun fibers can be applied as corneal tissue substitutes for direct application and as paracrine therapy to support materials for indirect applications. The developed applications of electrospun fibers may be an alternative to corneal transplantation and amniotic membranes in the future. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.
