Abstract
This paper reports a study that assessed the implementation of the pure Problem Based Learning (PBL) in Mandarin Chinese for Second Language classrooms. The study involved 13 undergraduate students and one Chinese tutor. The findings showed that the students had positive perceptions of problem-based language learning and that pure PBL has a positive impact on the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Pure PBL promotes meaningful, hands-on learning for Mandarin Chinese learners and enables them to connect what they learn in the classroom to real life. The results indicate that pure PBL can be successfully implemented on a small scale and that it is not excessively challenging for Mandarin Chinese learners. The results highlight the need for the students to be well trained in the theory and practices of PBL for its successful implementation. This study also shows the possibility of applying the pure PBL method to other Chinese classes.
