Abstract
Keijo-Nippo, a Japanese newspaper published in Korea during the Japanese colonial period, produced several films in the early 1920s. They aimed to use entertainment films as propaganda to assimilate Koreans to Japanese culture under the 'Japan and Korea are One' policy. The Glorious Death(1922) was one of these films made by Keijo-Nippo, based on a true story about the death of Toyota Ichiryo, a teacher at a middle school in Daegu. But before the premiere, this film stirred controversy over the authenticity of the story. This paper will examine the hoax about the film to look into the role of Keijo-Nippo in Korea, during the Japanese colonial period. This paper explores how the media strategy of Keijo nippo was used through the film "The Glorious Death", by examining the film's production background and release process. In 1922, a school teacher's death in the line of duty occurred almost simultaneously both in Japan and colonial Joseon. Comparing the reactions of each country's various media handling its own incident, it came to light that 1922 was a turning point for the educational system both in Japan and colonial Joseon.
