Abstract
This paper aims to explain the characteristics of non-finite adnominal clause ‘-da-go ha-nun’ and finite adnominal clause ‘-da-nun’ in Korean. There exists finite adnominal clause and non-finite adnominal clause. Finite adnominal clause represents proposition and non-finite adnominal clause represents event. Finite adnominal clause used only as ‘content’ semantic role of noun, but non-finite adnominal clause used as all semantic role of noun. ‘-da-go ha-nun’ represents event as non-finite adnominal clause and it can be reduced ‘-da-nun’ in relative clause. The meaning of the quotative verb ‘ha-’ in ‘-da-go ha-nun’ can be backgrounded when it used as ‘content’ semantic role. However if there is a specific context, the meaning of the quotative verb ‘ha-’ can be foregrounded again. ‘-Da-nun’ can be divided into ‘-da-nun1’ which is synchronically reduced form of ‘-da-go ha-nun’ and ‘-da-nun2’ which is adnomil ending. ‘-Da-nun1’ represents event. ‘-Da-nun2’ can be set because there are a lot of evidence that ‘-da-nun’ and ‘-da-go ha-nun’ are different in the place of the ‘content’ semantic role of noun. ‘-Da-nun’ in noun complment clause is understood as ‘-da-nun2’. ‘-Da-nun2’ represents proposition as a ending of finite adnominal clause and always it used as ‘content’ semantic role of noun.
