Abstract
In the past, residential units in South Korea had sufficient common ar-eas for the residents to interact as neighbors. However, nowadays, large-scale apartments with a quantitative focus have increased with-out leaving enough common space on the ground level because of their spatial structure (specifically of high-rise buildings) and low-density model. Nowadays, common areas are sparsely used. Further, they are not quite accessible to the residents, most of whom do not attach a sense of belonging to such spaces. Consequently, common spaces have become useless. Thankfully, ever since such problems were recognized, there have been various attempts to solve them. The design of A3BL is very similar to that of a board- type apartment tower, which is the most popular design and is rented out entirely. This study analyzes the spa-tial structure of the A3BL complex and draws the basic spatial charac-teristics for designing a multi-housing complex in future. In the A3BL complex, the space is organized into four clusters to revive the neigh-borhood community. This plan adds a transitional area between the public and private spaces. The architect intentionally designs this space to increase the chances of contact among the cluster residents. Conse-quently, the designed space flows from public space (street) to semi-public space (common field, stairs), to semi-private space (internal al-ley-corridors), to private space (residential unit). This layout provides a more useful communal space to promote daily interaction among the neighbors. © Research India Publications.
