- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to explore possibilities and approaches for utilizing SYNCROOM in online music practical classes to solve the latency issue, which is often mentioned as a major problem in online music practical classes. To achieve this objective, nine music teachers from professional music education institutions were selected as participants, and they were assigned both roles of instructors and learners in online music classes. Data on their experiences were collected through interviews. The collected data were analyzed, and the following results were obtained. The advantages of using SYNCROOM in online classes were categorized as ‘Possibility of real-time musical communication online’ and ‘Sharing enjoyable musical experiences.’ The disadvantages were categorized as ‘Disadvantages of using SYNCROOM from practical and environmental perspectives’ and ‘Limitations in mediating from a pedagogical perspective.’ Following strategies are needed to effectively use the SYNCROOM, such as using it with a video conferencing platform like ZOOM, using the SYNCROOM’s built-in metronome during performances, and teachers providing students with audio interfaces and microphones for use in the SYNCROOM. These results suggest the meaningful possibility of revitalizing online music classes.
