Abstract
The inclusion of saponins in personal care products has gained traction due to urgent ecological and economic demands for natural surface-active agents, presenting a rational shift from synthetic surfactants. Saponins belong to a versatile class of amphiphilic glycosides composed of triterpenes or steroid aglycones and single or multiple sugar chains and are widely distributed in plants and a few marine life forms. The inclusion of saponins in personal care products has gained traction due to urgent ecological and economic demands for natural surfaceactive agents, presenting a rational shift from synthetic surfactants. The polar (sugar) and nonpolar (steroid or triterpene) groups present in saponins have potent surface-active characteristics. Many conventional and industrial applications result from structural variations in physiochemical and biological characteristics. This study examines the surface-active characteristics of the polar (sugar) and nonpolar (steroid or triterpene) groups of saponins to determine their potential as personal care surfactants. Through a comprehensive review of physiochemical and biological variations, conventional and industrial applications are also examined. The investigation extends to plant-derived surface actions of saponin, with a thorough analysis of their surfactant capabilities in comparison to synthetic counterparts. The study examines the composition and characteristics of saponins and emphasizes their uses in oral, skin, hair, and fabric care. This exploration sheds light on the unique capabilities of saponins and their relevance in enhancing personal care formulations.
