Abstract
This paper aims to examine the evolving ecosystem of the gaming industry due to the rapid development of generative AI (artificial Intelligence) technology and to explore strategies for responding to these changes. Since OpenAI released ChatGPT in November 2022, the game content industry has become one of the primary adopters and investors in generative AI. This technology can streamline game development and reduce budgets by automating highly repetitive tasks, and it can also enhance the player experience by generating content that reacts and interacts with players in real time. In practice, generative AI tools are being integrated into all aspects of game creation and operations including game levels, maps, quests, intelligent NPCs, and QA (Quality Assurance) automation. Given the technology-sensitive and labor-intensive nature of the industry, generative AI is poised to significantly transform the future of game development. However, this transformation also raises concerns about copyright issues and potential mass layoffs. Therefore, the industry needs to embrace the inevitable changes brought by generative AI and move beyond the dichotomous ‘replacement theory.’ It needs to establish new legal and ethical guidelines and promote collaborative intelligence that can can combine the strengths of human creativity and AI technology to deliver a new player experience in gaming.
