- Abstract
- Marie Antoinette Sontag (1838-1922) is the link who has connected modern time and comtemporary by introducing the European culture to the royal court of Chosun dynasty. Sontag was born in Alsace-Lorraine in the year of 1838. She arrived in Chosun for the first time in 1885 at the age of 47 as a member of the Russian diplomat Weber’s family.
This study has corrected the misunderstandings and confusions of Sontag and Sontag Hotel by studying the new found documents. Also, this study has presented a new established theory of Sontag’s biochron, relatives, background of growth and etc. It was faciliated by the family relatonship document and death certificate, temporarily located in Russia and France, that was confirmed by Sylvia Bräsel and Prof. Kim Young-ja in the year of 2014. Furthermore, Sontag Hotel, located in the exotic place called Jungdong, is not only the cradle of korean modernization but also known as the modern cultural space. It can be said that Sontag Hotel has let the korean modern popular culture to be realized. Due to Sontag's effort of introducing European culture, Korean popular culture was born and now she has become a great history in cultural life.
