Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of fitness, waist circumference(WC), hepatic markers[Alanine aminotransferase(ALT), aspartate aminotransferase(AST)] and diabetes including impaired glucose tolerance(IGT) in middle-aged women. A total of 249 subjects participated in the cross-sectional study. We measured body mass index(BMI), WC, physical fitness(sit-up), hepatic markers(ALT, AST) and diabetes risk factors including fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c). Results showed that 1) middle-aged women with high WC had significantly increased BMI, triglycerides(TG), glucose, HbA1c, AST, and ALT compared with those in low WC, 2) the subjects with high fitness had significantly decreased BMI, TG, AST, and ALT compared with those in low fitness. 3) When subjects were divided into four groups: high fitness and low WC, low fitness and low WC, high fitness and high WC, and low fitness and high WC. Low fitness and high WC subjects had 2.29 times higher the prevalence of diabetes including IGT compared to high fitness and low WC subjects after adjusted for age. In conclusion, This study showed that fitness and WC are important factors for the improvement of diabetes and hepatic markers in middle-age women
