- Abstract
- Contemporary fashion design may be represented as an image with new modern symbols through reinterpretation from the past. In such a case, Gothic allows various visual styles and sub-cultural practice in fashion images, providing the subculture with the source for a bluff, narcissism and diversity through a typical response of media.
The nature of the Gothic culture lies in imagination and fear profoundly existed in human inner side. Such a phenomenon is inherent in contemporary culture and used for almost every medium influencing sensitivity including fashion and advertisement as well as pop culture. Accordingly, Gothic culture has an appeal to the masses required by the age. So, it is used for commercialization via imaging in such an economic environment of the modern times.
In the modern commercialization, expressions of the Gothic image range from subculture to mainstream culture including fashion, film, cartoon, commercial ad, festival, literature and art. The origin of Gothic culture has sustained its vitality through architecture, literature, art and festival.
In order to analyze the Gothic image expressed in clothes, this study aims at examining a connection between image and Gothic culture in costumes through exploring the Gothic culture of various genres.
