『관촌수필』의 독법 두 가지

Abstract

본고는 이문구의 단편 연작소설 『관촌수필』의 독법 두 가지를 적용하여 텍스트 이해의 새로운 방법을 試論하고, 나아가 고전서사론의 활용 가능성을 탐색해 본 결과이다. 『관촌수필』에 대한 평가는 크게 엇갈린다. 토속어와 한자어가 융합된 생동감 넘치는 입말 문체는 높게 평가되고, 엉성한 플롯과 빈약한 사건 구성은 약점으로 지적받았다. ‘소설 미달이거나 소설 초월’이라는 평가는 서구의 소설론에 입지를 두고 있는 현대소설 연구자의 당혹감의 표현이며 평가의 유보인데, 이러한 유보의 태도는 여전히 이어지고 있다. 이는 소설에 내재된 전통 서사와 밖에서 가져온 비평 기준 사이의 괴리이다. 이 괴리를 조절하기 위해 논자는 『관촌수필』 고유의 ‘제목의 함축성’과 ‘부분의 서정미’를 주목했다. 또 한 인물을 여러 각 편에 분산 배치하거나 여러 인물을 한 편에 담아내는 전통 서사 구성법을 원용했다. 그 결과 근대 서구 소설론의 기준에서 『관촌수필』의 결함으로 지적되었던 점들을 온전하게 해석하는 시각을 얻을 수 있었다. 『관촌수필』은 독자로 하여금 자신의 유년시절 · 자기 삶의 현장 · 주변의 사람들을 떠올리게 한다. 나아가 나도 이런 글을 써볼 수 있지 않을까 하는 생각을 일으킨다. 엄청난 상상력이나 기묘한 문필이 아니어도 시도할 수 있을 같은 느낌, 소설 쓰기는 대단한 재능이 아니어도 할 수 있는 영역이라는 생각을 들게 한다. 이것은 『관촌수필』이 지닌 최대의 미덕이며, 지속적으로 독자들의 사랑과 연구자들의 관심을 받는 근거이다.

This study analyzed new approaches to understand texts by applying two methods reading Gwanchonsupil, the serial short stories by Yi Mun-gu, and investigated the applicability of classical narration theories. Opinions on Gwanchonsupil are significantly different. The dynamic colloquial style mixing local language and Chinese characters is highly appraised but the sloppy plots and weak episodes were pointed out as the demerits. The opinion that Gwanchonsupil is ‘less than fiction or more than fiction’ is the expression of embarrassment and reservation of evaluation by a modern novel researcher focusing on the western novel discourse. Such attitude of reservation is still continuing. The reservation of evaluation is the gap between the traditional narrative contained in the novel and the standards of criticism from external world. For adjusting the gap, this study focused on the ‘lyrical aspect of a part’ and ‘implication of the unique title’ of Gwanchonsupil. Furthermore, this study cited the traditional narrative plotting method describing several characters in a piece of episode or using one character in several episodes. As a result, this study found out the viewpoint properly analyzing the elements which were pointed out as the demerits of Gwanchonsupil in accordance with the criteria of western novel discourse in the modern times. Gwanchonsupil reminds readers of their childhood and the living environment and people around them. Furthermore, Gwanchonsupil makes us think that we may write this kind of stories. It makes readers feel that they may make a try even without distinguished writing skills or marvelous imagination and think they may write novels even without great talents. It’s the best virtue of “Gwanchon Essay” and the reason why it still draws the attention from researchers and love from readers.
