Abstract
Lee, Do-heum. 2015. A Study on the Aesthetics of Hwajaeng in the poems of Ohhyun Cho. Based on the aesthetics of Wonhyo( , Korean great Buddhist monk and philosopher, 617∼686)’s Hwajeang Buddhism, I analyzed the poems of Ohyun Cho in four frames: the aesthetics of hwajaeng( , the harmonization of all oppositions), the coexistence through the dependent origination of neither-one-nor-two, peeping at the ultimate truth while transcending the language through language, saving for all living things through the oneness of Buddha and people. Each line of the Cho’s sijo( , a Korean poetic form) has its own particular role. The first line presents an aesthetic experience between the self and the world. The second line describes the meanings of the first line deeply. The first meter of third line is the punch meter. At this point, escalating the best lyricism, the poem converts all conflicts to harmony poetically. So, the third line resolves all the conflicts in the first and second line and joins the self and the world into one. His poem expresses such the aesthetics of Hwajaeng as Heung( , getting excited with joy) or mushim( , being unintentional). The oppositions between the saint and man of a insect, emptiness and filling, the temple and the mundane world, the world and the self in his poems convert into the relations of inter-becoming and neither-one-nor-two. Those are dependently originated each other. He accomplished the aesthetics of Hwajaeng which all oppositions are put through the harmony. His poem creates infinite world beyond language. He understood that the language distorts the truth. However, he realized that it is very difficult to wake the truth without going through the language. So, he peeped at the ultimate truth while transcending the language through language. He sought to the harmony of between the world of enlightenment and that of common. He synthesized the authenticity originated from the critic for the contradiction of a reality and estrangement derived from the creation of new form. Thus, his poem achieved the aesthetics of hwajaeng.
