Abstract
People’s requirement for safe agricultural products grown from in the cleanest environment has been increasing because of the rising interest in health. Thus, the demand for environmental-friendly organic agriculture materials has also increased. Environmental-friendly organic materials, such as the Neem extract (azadirachtin), Sophorae radix extract (matrine) and Derris extract (rotenone) have been widely used for agricultural products in Korea. The aim of this study is to research the side effects of azadirachtin, matrine and rotenone on humans and animal. We carried out a comprehensive search of the Pubmed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and manual searches of relevant journals for studies from 1970 to 2011. As environmental-friendly organic agriculture materials are in wide use and components are complex, standardization of these materials is difficult. In addition, residual pattern regarding environmental-friendly agriculture organic materials have not yet been established. For example, few studies reported that azadirachtin and rotenone have carcinogenic effects, while it has been reported recently that rotenone is related to Parkinson’s disease. Our data suggest that dietary exposure assessment and risk assessment are needed for increasing the safety and reliability of carcinogenesis possibility environmental-friendly agriculture organic materials.
