갈릴레오의 과학 연구: 과학철학적 STS(과학기술학) 교육의 한 사례

Abstract

본 논문은 갈릴레오의 과학 연구에서 드러나는 여러 특징들이 과학철학적 STS(과학기술학) 교육에서 유용하게 활용될 가능성을 탐색한다. 갈릴레오의 과학 연구는 그가 이룩한 과학적 업적만이 아니라 그의 종교재판이 과학연구가 이루어지는 방식에 대해 갖는다고 여겨지는 여러 메타과학적 함의로 인하여 과학철학적으로 더욱 흥미로운 사례이다. 필자는 갈릴레오의 과학 연구가 제기하는 과학철학적 쟁점을 망원경의 인식론적 지위, 후원의 사회인식론적 역할, 올바른 성서해석의 내용이라는 세 가지 축을 통해 분석하고 각각의 경우에 과학 연구 일반에 대해 갈릴레오의 사례가 갖는 시사점에 대해 논의한다. 이를 통해 비록 하나의 과학연구 사례가 과학철학적 논증을 대체할 수는 없지만 과학척학적 STS(과학기술학) 교육에서는 유용하게 활용될 수 있음을 주장한다.

I examine a number of philosophical aspects of Galileo’s scientific research in order to explore the possibility of using the case in the ‘philosophical’ STS education. Gelileo’s case is significant not just because he achieved so prominently as a scientist, but also because his way of doing research itself has lots of meta-scientific implications worthy of studying carefully in STS education. I discuss these implications along the three core issues; the epistemological status of Galileo’s telescope, the socio-epistemological role of patronage, and the ‘correct’ interpretation of the Bible. From the analysis I claim that although a philosophical case study of one particular scientist’s research cannot replace a proper argument in philosophy of science, the case can be legitimately and resourcefully employed in the ‘philosophical’ STS education.
