Metaphors for Poetry: Reflections on W. B. Yeats’s A Vision

Abstract

This paper seeks to look beyond the mystical elements in W.B. Yeats's A Vision in order to consider what it reveals about the creative process. A Vision arrives at a crucial moment, wedged historically between Yeats's interests in the occult and emerging secular explanations (Freud's theory of the unconscious, for instance) of what lies "beyond" the edges of human consciousness. More than just providing particular "metaphors for poetry," as Yeats's "instructors" put it, A Vision thus provides a fascinating insight into the way in which poetic inspiration comes about.
