Abstract
As entering an aging society, facilities for the elderly are rapidly increasing in response to the growing elderly population. In proportion to this, the frequency of accidents in elderly facilities is also increasing. Elderly’s eyesight tends to be narrow and their ability to distinguish colors reduced due to xanthopsia. In addition, it has reported that the adaptability of elderly’s eyesight to the surroundings is reduced and the elderly have difficulty to in recognizing the signs of action inducement or emergency stair, so they cannot evacuate from emergency situations such as fire and they could fall down from the emergency stair. Therefore, in this study, we conducted color studies to improve the color visibility of directional sign in emergency stair by performing a survey by from the age group on the color scheme of the emergency stair sign in order to extract optimum color coordinate. The survey experiment showed that the elderly’s visual cognitive abilities were different from those of ordinary people. The sign was most visible to 80s when and when the background color was green and the color of the sign was white. Also, if the background color is white, they cannot distinguish the signs from the wall. These results can support the opinion that it is difficult for older people to recognize the deterioration of the color recognition of the yellow and blue systems and the same color system. Based on these experiments, we could identify that the visual cognitive abilities of the elderly were different from those of the general public, and that the study of color guidelines considering the views of the elderly should be carried out continuously.
