金聖嘆의 水滸傳 비평 (8)

Abstract

이 글은 70회 본 『수호전』의 50∼57회를 텍스트로 삼아, 김성탄의 비평 양상과 특징을 살펴본 것이다. 50∼70회에서는 세 차례의 큰 전투가 벌어진다. 하지만 김성탄의 비평은 표면상의 서사 흐름이나 화려한 전투 장면 등에 대해서는 별로 눈길을 주지 않는다. 그는 외견상 더 작고 덜 중요한 요소들을 주목하고, 그것들의 숨겨진 기능과 의미를 찾아내는 일에 힘을 기울인다. 李逵의 성격이 변화하는 미묘한 과정, 섬세한 묘사를 통해 만들어진 時遷의 좀도둑 형상, 전투에서 패하고 혼자 달아난 乎延灼의 失意 행색은, 김성탄이 포착한 인물들의 다양한 개성이다. 朱仝과 李逵의 다툼, 戴宗과 李逵의 薊州 행, 湯隆의 등장 장면 등은, 서사 전개의 관점에서 보면 사건의 연결과 전환을 위한 하나의 장치임을 밝혀냈다. 白秀英의 노래 가사, 公孫勝의 주거 풍경, 徐寧의 가정 모습 등은, 이야기의 운치와 풍미를 풍부하게 해주는 서정미로 높게 평가했다. 이러한 비평은 줄거리와 내용 중심의 관습적 『수호전』 읽기를 중지시키는 것은 물론, 나아가 글 읽기 방법 전반 대해 성찰하게 하는 힘을 지닌다. 이 글은 비평의 본질과 방향에 대한 질문이며 하나의 답이다.

This study examines the patterns and features of Kim Seong-tan’s criticism on the 50th∼57th edition of Water Margin comprising 70 editions. There are three massive battles in the 50th to 70th edition. However, Kim Seong-tan’s criticism doesn’t seem to pay attention to the ostensible flow of narration or splendid battle scenes. He focused on less important elements which look ostensibly smaller and endeavored to find out the hidden meaning and function of those elements. The delicate change process of Li Kui’s characteristics, the appearance of Shi Qian like a petty theft created by elaborate description, and despairing appearance of Huyan Zhuo running away alone after the defeat in the battle show the diverse personalities of characters identified by Kim Seong-tan. Kim Seong-tan identified that the dispute between Zhu Tong and Li Kui, departure of Dai Jong and Li Kui to Jizhou(present Tianjin) and advent of Tang Long were one of devices for the connection and turn of events in terms of the development of the epic. Lyrics of Bai Xiuying, residential scene of Gongsun Sheng and the household of Xu Ning are highly evaluated in terms of lyrical aesthetics enriching the dignity and elegance of stories. Such criticism induces to stop conventional approach of reading ‘Water Margin’ focusing on stories and contents and to reflect on the general approach of reading. This study is the question on the nature and direction of criticism as well as one of answers to that question.
