Abstract
In this research, we propose a vacuum membrane dehumidifier-assisted dedicated outdoor air system (VMD-DOAS), and its energy performance is estimated by detailed energy simulation. The vacuum membrane dehumidifier (VMD) is an air dryer, which make a partial vapor pressure drop using a vacuum pump with a membrane layer. As using gas solution diffusion effect, the VMD can dehumidify air with an isothermal process, which is hard to realize in conventional dehumidification systems. The proposed DOAS consists of an enthalpy exchanger, a vacuum membrane dehumidifier, and cooling coil. The dehumidification performance and operation energy consumption of the proposed system were compared with conventional DOASs using condensation dehumidification with cooling coil (i.e., Reference A) and a dessicant material with active desiccant wheel (i.e., Reference B). The performance of dehumidification and energy was estimated by using a latent cooling ratio and coefficient of performance with annual energy simulation. The average latent cooling ratio of studied DOASs was 1 in proposed DOAS, 0.43 in Reference A, and 0.25 in Reference B, respectively, and the average coefficient of performance of studied systems was 1.98 in the VMD-DOAS, 2.70 in Reference A, and 1.73 in Reference B. Consequently, the proposed system reduced the total annual operation energy by 40.5% compared with Reference B and by 21.8% compared with Reference A.
