- Abstract
- The purpose of this paper is to evaluate energy and operating performance of a vacuum membrane dehumidification (VMD) system-assisted variable air volume (VAV) air conditioning system. The proposed system mainly consists of a vacuum membrane dehumidifier for controlling latent cooling load, and a cooling coil for controlling sensible cooling load. The VMD system dehumidifies the humid process air owing to the pressure difference between the membrane layer. Therefore, the VMD can independently provide latent cooling without the temperature change. The air passing through the VMD is then sensibly cooled by the cooling coil to meet the target supply air condition. To evaluate the energy saving potential of a proposed system, the energy and operating performance in cooling seasons were compared with that of a conventional VAV system via a series of energy simulation using the TRNSYS 18 program and engineering equation solver (EES). The results showed that the latent cooling load from a proposed system was 45% less than that of a reference system, and saved 16% of the primary energy consumption compared with the reference system.
