Abstract
Finite element analyses (FEA) have been used to accurately predict the behavior of the structural members. The accuracy of the analysis results can be verified by comparing with test results. In FEA, the perfect geometry of a member is often assumed. However, such assumption may lead to overestimation of actual member responses. This study proposed a method considering geometric imperfections in FEA of WUF-W connections using the modal superpositions of buckling analysis results. The best combination of scale factors was determined to best match the limitation on geometric imperfection specified for W-section in ASTM A6/A6M. To verify the accuracy of the analysis results, the measured cyclic curves of tested WUF-W connection specimens were simulated with FEA considering the initial geometric imperfection. It was observed that the cyclic curves of WUF connection specimens obtained from FEA matched the their measured cyclic curves.
