선형 수요곡선 간 탄력성 비교 - 가격절편을 이용한 탄력성 비교 및 활용

Abstract

수요의 가격탄력성이 수요량과 가격의 변화율의 비임에도 불구하고 수요곡선의 기울기가 가격탄력성을 직접적으로 결정한다고 잘못 이해되는 경향이 있다. 본 논문은 선형 수요곡선에 대해 가격이 주어질 경우 가격탄력성은 수요곡선의 기울기가 아니라 세로절편에 의해 결정됨을 보인다. 또한 이를 바탕으로 서로 다른 수요곡선에 대해 탄력성이 같은 점을 찾고 임의의 두 점의 탄력성 크기를 비교할 수 있는 시각적이고 체계적인 방법을 제시한다. 본 논문의 분석 결과는 수요의 가격탄력성에 대한 이해와 관련하여 학습자와 교수자 모두에게 유용하게 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Price elasticities of demand are often mistakenly understood to directly depend on the slope of the demand curve although they are the ratio of the percentage change in quantity demanded to the percentage change in price. Focusing on linear demand curves, this paper shows that given price, price elasticity is determined not by the slope of the demand curve but by the price intercept. Based on this result, this paper also presents systematic ways to locate points with the same elasticity and to compare the elasticities of two points on different demand curves. The results of this paper will be useful for both learners and teachers of economics in understanding the concept of price elasticity of demand.
