Abstract
Ahn, Sung-Ho and Kim, Hyang-Sook. 2017. A secondary-level English language program for fostering North Korean refugee students’ intercultural competencies: An action research. Korean Journal of English Language and Linguistics 17-2, 401-428. This action research explores ways of improving intercultural competencies through an English language program, specifically designed for five North Korean refugee students in an alternative school. The program adopted four culturally rich texts and was implemented so that the participants were exposed to and reflected on cultural universals and differences involving facts related to their own and other peoples’ cultures, and undertook activities requiring inter-personal and social care and collaboration. The results show that the participants have improved in intercultural sensitivity and accordingly in intercultural competencies including knowledge, skills, and attitudes, among others. In this respect, this study carries positive education implications for designing and implementing an intercultural, or more generally competencies-centered, educational program not only for students with marginal cultural backgrounds like North Korean refugees, but also for all students in Korea, who are unanimously invited to live in an ever increasingly intercultural and multicultural society of globalization.
